Gesture Drawing (pt1)

Last week's life drawing class began with a slight change of pace - gesture drawings.

1 minute gesture drawings:

Draw-Life-14-08
Draw-Life-14-09
Draw-Life-14-10
Draw-Life-14-11

2 minute gesture drawings:
Draw-Life-14-12
Draw-Life-14-13
Draw-Life-14-14

These are the fastest drawing I've ever had to do! With gesture drawings there's no time to think. As soon as the model hits that pose you're frantically scribbling out the roughest lines in an attempt to capture something, anything, before the pose changes. It was actually quite liberating and excellent as a warm-up exercise. You're forced to distill down to the essence of a pose - the line of action. With quick drawings, it helps to not lift your pencil up from the page (particularly evident in the last 3 drawings) - you just feel your way around the pose that way.

  1. These are really impressive for 1 and 2 min drawings. Those are my favorite kind as well. You must be moving the pencil around like crazy to get that much on the page in 2 min. I want to get back into life drawing as soon as a I find a good (and cheep) class that I can fit into my schedule.
