Life Drawing: Autumn '09 pt. 3

In direct contrast to the week before, last Monday at life drawing class we worked on very small paper - and by that I mean about 1 x 1.5 inches.

Despite drawing at a similar size when I thumbnail ideas for animation, I found working like this in the life drawing class quite challenging.

Typically, I struggled most with getting proportions to feel right and fit within the confines of my tiny canvas.

Drawing tiny is a great way to remind yourself of the importance of shape organisation in picture-making. Getting the larger forms / main statements in place before working on the finer details is where it's at.

At times I was reminded of how unneccesary those details can be in creating an appealing and more importantly - engaging drawing.

Halfway through the session I decided to do a series of studies from roughly the same point of view - shifting my place only slightly to keep me from repeating the same observations. The idea was to study varying approaches to detail and tone:

This promted me to do a couple of value studies, specifically looking at how the model relates to her environment, tonally:

As you can see, a lot of "detail" can be implied by carefully composing the shapes and their tonal relationship. Fascinating stuff (to me at least).
